Belly Dance Cuff Bracelet, Henna Motifs Etched in Copper

You’re a strong, sexy woman. You love the detailed patterns that are painted with henna on the hands and feet of Indian brides. You like your jewelry big and bold, yet light and delicate. You complete your tribal costume with an etched copper bracelet.

I love to draw henna patterns. In the world of henna designs, there are no mistakes. If I ‘accidentally’ draw something I didn’t plan, it just becomes incorporated into the larger picture. For quite a while, I’ve been yearning for a way to incorporate the freedom and joy I feel when quickly drawing freehand henna designs with the mechanics and expense of working with metal. And I’ve found a technique that does that!

For this series of bracelets, I sketched henna patterns with black marker on paper. I had the joy of playing, drawing as many designs as I wanted with only the waste of a few pieces for the ones I didn’t like. Then I photocopied the patterns I liked the best onto a special film, which allowed me to heat-transfer the designs onto strips of copper. I suspended the copper strips in an acid bath for an hour, and the metal was etched away where it wasn’t protected by the heat-transferred designs, leaving the raised designs behind when I was finished.

The strip of copper measures 1 ¼” wide and 6” long (3cm x 15cm). It is curved to allow a gap of about 1” (2.5cm), so the circumference of the bracelet is about 7” (17.5cm), but copper is soft enough you can gently bend it somewhat larger or smaller.
