Vintage from the 1920s

Description

This lovely vintage Japanese patinated bronze vase dates to about 1920s and 1930s. This cast bronze vase has a splayed base that tapers outward to a wide shoulder, decorated with a geometric band with an X on two sides. The vase has a grey-green patina, and it is unmarked.

Japan has a long tradition of casting bronze, which found a new audience after the 1860s, when the Paris World Exhibition opened Europe to Japanese arts and crafts. Exports to the United States followed, often taking modernist or Art Deco forms, such as this one. This vase can be used with the Japanese Ikebana tradition of flower arranging, but it's also striking just on its own.

The vase is in very good condition. It has one area of discoloration and a tiny scratch on the patina on the rim, plus a spot of damage under the bands on one side (looks like a casting error--small pinpoint indentations, which don't go all the way though).

Size: 5.5 inches tall x 3.25 inches across (14 x 8.3 cm)
