Item details

Vintage from the 19th century

Never leave home without it . . .

By the beginning of the 19th century, the visiting or calling card was an essential part of introductions, invitations and visits for any proper lady. And the cases in which they were carried were status enhancing accessories as well!

This highly-decorated case packs a lot punch for such a sweet, little piece. The case is made from two pressed metal panels adorned with piping, flowers and scrolls. The patina is lovely - I am offering as found and have not attempted to clean or polish. I'm not sure of the metal, but I'm thinking possibly a silver-plated copper along with brass.

On the center of the back is a plain cartouche; however, on the front panel, the cartouche has been cut away and a very beautiful and ornate, open fretwork panel has been applied. Placed on the diagonal, the center square medallion of genuine, faceted amethyst stones adds dimension and a lovely pop of color.

The unique ball and loop closure gives way to a flap-hinged opening - about 1/3 of the back of the case swings down to expose the inside. Both the catch and the hinge are in perfect order - opening and closing completely and securely.

The overall condition is excellent - the seams are secure; there are no dents, breaks or repairs; all stones are present.

The purse measures 3" high excluding the clasp (3 3/8" with the clasp) by 2 1/8" wide at the frame (2 3/8 at the chain loops) by 3/8" deep. The rolo chain handle is attached to the frame by two leafy scroll loop hooks and measures 9" with a 4 1/4" drop.

Item price includes US Postal Service shipping with Insurance and / or Delivery Confirmation services.
