Description

Late 1950's to early 1960's ivory wide weave cellophane straw beret. Styled to barely cup the crown in the back and flare outward in the front. A delicate taupe dotted face veil is attached with hat pins on both sides. Interior is finished with a stiff fabric and the standard petersham ribbon along with two side placement combs.

Inner circumference is 20 inches but given the style most any size head could wear this.

Lovely condition showing no wear or age.

Label is John Frederics, New York and a store label of L. S. Ayres & Co. John Frederics (Frederic Hirst) was partnered with Mr. John (John Harberger) from 1929 until 1948. Together they created many hats for the movies, notably for Gone With The Wind. In 1948, they dissolved their partnership with Hirst keeping the original name of Mr John Frederics and Harberger starting the "Mr John" label. Miss Frederics is a line of Mr Frederics (info courtesy of the Vintage Fashion Guild).

L. S. Ayres and Co. was an Indianapolis department store founded in 1872. Known for women's fashions and their Tea Room. Operated until 2006 at which time it was acquired by Macy's Midwest.
