Description

This small vintage Native American earthenware pot is a black on red pot -- hand coiled with a matte red slip glaze and black geometric decorations painted on the upper half. The inside is unglazed and is a pinkish-tan clay.

The pot is unsigned but has a small sticker on it attributing it to San Ildefonso pueblo (placed there by some earlier dealer). I can't really confirm that designation (the pot is similar to some by other tribes, including Maricopa), but it seems likely. The pot has a matte finish on it, not the glossy shine you'd find on some pots, and around the bottom there are places the slip glaze has about worn off. I would guess this dates to the early 20th century (perhaps late 19th).

Aside from the wear mentioned and a few small surface nicks and scratches, the pot is in very good condition, with no cracks or major damage. Please see photos.

Size: About 2.5 inches tall x 3.25 inches wide (6.3 x 8.3 cm)
