Description

A Selection From The Poetry of Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Copyright Edition With The Portrait of the Author. This is a charming copy published in 1872 by Bernhard Tauchnitz of Leipzig. Delightfully bound, with foxed and tanned pages but otherwise in good condition for an antique book of nearly 150 years old.

Elizabeth Barrett Browning's work had a major influence on prominent writers of the Victorian era, including the American poets Edgar Allan Poe and Emily Dickinson. She is remembered for such poems as "How Do I Love Thee?" (Sonnet 43, 1845) and Aurora Leigh (1856).

The main condition point to note with this edition is that there is heavy tanning and foxing to the pages. Otherwise the contents are good. Opens with a charming portrait of Browning with the original tissue guard (see photos). Has a neatly inked name on the front endpaper, otherwise no other writing or marks of previous ownership. There is one corner which has had a small tear across at the bottom but this in no way effects any of the text.

In a very attractive three-quarter binding of teal green cloth with gilt floral sides. There is some very mild rubbing to the corners of the cloth and some light markings mostly to the rear board at the bottom edge (see photos), but generally clean and good. The spine has slight rubbing at the head and tail. The gilt titles are bright.

A charming antique edition. Your copy of Selections From The Poetry of Elizabeth Barrett Browning will be wrapped with care in tissue and ribbon.

Slightly larger than pocket sized: H 16 cm x 12 cm, 253 pages, 0.25 kg. I dispatch worldwide daily from the UK. (With the exception of a small number of countries).
