Materials

douglas fir, hand hewn beam, vintage barnwood, barnwood, barn beam, beautiful wood, salvaged wood, antique wood, reclaimed wood, repurposed wood, Northern Pine, distressed wood, hand hewn wood

Authentic hand hewn barn timbers compliment an urban farmhouse, industrial, or modern decor. This piece has two mortise holes that were hand cut to receive cross timbers. They are more evidence of the hard work that went into every piece of wood in an old barn. Home Depot just didn't do rural delivery back then. I believe this piece is balsam poplar.

DIMENSIONS
72" x 6" x "6"

FINISHING
Sanded with multiple grits of sandpaper to a smooth feel but not too much so as not to remove the beautiful aged patina and rustic characteristics.

INSTALLATION
This listing is just for the mantel/shelf. Attaching this can only be done on site so that it can be properly set to attach to your wall's type and location of wood studs, mortar between bricks or stone. Also it depends on preferred style, whether floating or with braces/corbels.

If you are looking for brackets to hold up your mantel try an Etsy search, there are thousands to choose from!

Here is good resource for invisible floating brackets:

SHIPPING
This piece will ship Fed Ex wrapped in multiple layers of cardboard.

HISTORY OF OUR WOOD
This lumber is trimmed from massive hand-hewn beams salvaged from old barns in Wisconsin and Iowa. Amish crews disassemble the barns and salvage as much as they can. Originally erected in the 19th and early 20th century most of these barns were in use for over 100 years before being obsolesced by modern farming practices. They saw farming change from horse power to diesel power. As the culture changed so too do the buildings that support it. This wood was cut from old growth trees in the 19th century by hand saw and ax then shaped by hand with adzes and muscles. I try to present as much of that old effort as I can. The wood in these beams is likely older than the USA. With a magnifying glass I have counted more than 250 growth rings on some of these pieces. This listing is for this exact piece. One side has been planed flat to use against your wall.

Shipping policies

We almost always ship Fed Ex Domestically in the US, Out of the country each order is a different story. International shipping is a little trickier, PLEASE Click the "Ask a Question" box FOR A REAL SHIPPING QUOTE INTERNATIONALLY. If you are outside the continental US, email and we will work something out.

We do not have any accommodations for Non-US light sockets or plugs.

Shipping big stuff
If we can use one of the above carriers we will. However some things are just too big and need to go freight. In that case we will make a crate for it and ship with a freight company that is familiar with your area. We will need your phone number so they can call you to arrange the delivery. Unless you have a forklift handy, plan on having help to get it off the truck and in the house. It is the rare truck driver who will be able to help unload past his/her tailgate.
