A short history of the diamond: Our love for diamonds started in India and it is believed that they were traded here in as early as the fourth century BC. They were originally in limited supply and only worn by the elite who could afford them, but by the 1400's they were becoming very fashionable in Europe. By the 1700's the supply in India started to decline and Brazil emerged to dominate the market for 150 years.

By the 1800's the demand was on the rise in Western Europe and the US and in the later years the first South African deposits were discovered. This led to DeBeers being established in 1888 and by 1900 they controlled an estimated 90% of the world's production of rough diamonds. Today though diamond supply doesn't just come from one channel but is filtered through many different avenues.

Interesting fact: The largest cut diamond currently stands at 530.4 carats and is named 'Star of Africa 1'.
