Henry is an spalted beech wood serving platter that was hand turned on my lathe and made from wood that was responsibly sourced in nearby Franklin County, Kentucky.

This particular piece of wood has a rich depth to its coloring as well as some beautiful figuring and spalting. Spalting occurs when wood is allowed to begin initial stages of decay and then subsequently dried to prevent further decay. The partial decay is called spalting and gives the wood dark contrasting lines and streaks where fungus began to attack the wood.

You will notice a few cracks in the wood as well. These cracks are naturally occurring and have been reinforced. They add to the beauty and character and make this a truly one-of-a-kind piece.

The platter measures approximately 12-7/8" wide, 1-7/8" tall, and 1" deep and was polished with Terra Nova NaturOil which is FDA approved, kosher, environmentally friendly, non-toxic, free of dyes, perfumes, and nut oils that can cause allergic reactions, and protects against drying, cracking, and water damage. The NaturOil is followed by a coating of beeswax which is applied for added protection.

Creekview Woodshop donates a portion of every sale to Green Forests Work, a nonprofit dedicated to re-establishing healthy and productive forests on formerly mined lands in Appalachia.

A little about me....
I’m a historical archaeologist and spend my days excavating sites, analyzing artifacts, and writing up my findings. When I’m not in the field, you’ll find me in my woodshop. I try to use mostly found and reclaimed wood from here in Central Kentucky, incorporating elements of the wood as I found it into each piece as a reminder that the object you see once was part of a beautiful, living tree.

I purchased this as a gift for mothers day and it was perfect. The design, the wood itself and the craftsmanship are all superior. Thank you!

What a beautiful bowl! The care it took in chosing the wood and turning the bowl is very apparent. And the handwritten note was a great personal touch! I have this bowl in a special spot in my entryway so I see it every time I come home.

Arrived safely and quickly. The beautiful woodworking is so much more apparent in person. It's balanced and lightweight in profile and from the top. I bought it for myself when I finally get out of perpetual renting and into my first home as a future housewarming gift (couldn't resist). Thank you!
