Balbus: A picture book of building written and devised by Oliver HIll and Hans Tisdall.
Published by Pleiades Books Ltd 1944

A 1st edition hardback of architect Oliver Hill's architectural history of the world. The book starts with the most basic form of shelter: "The snail carries his house on his back and that solves his problem." to the 'very tall buildings called skyscrapers' of New York. Each page is accompanied by a full-page colour lithograph by designer Hans Tisdall and is a noted classic example of early autolithography.

Hans Tisdall was a German born artist who worked in the UK. Remember mostly for his bookjacket and textile designs. He was among the designers who contributed to the Festival of Britain in 1951, winning the competition to design the entrance to the funfair at Battersea Park's pleasure gardens.

Condition: Paper covered boards with cloth spine. A few scuffs/ scratches and wear to boards as well as rubbing to board edges. A few foxing spots to pages.

Size: 26x21 cm
