Description

The wood used for these coasters is from a branch of an English oak tree which was uprooted by high winds around Christmas 2017.

The wood was turned 'green' which means it still contained the majority of the moisture the tree was using when it met its untimely end. Once finished the coasters have been deliberately dried quickly to create 'checks' (splits) in the wood as it loses its moisture and shrinks, giving each one a little bit of character.

With the pith (the centre of the rings) being close to the edge of the original branch, the splits in many of these pieces are fairly small and the natural warping of the wood is minimal, but each one is completely unique so some very slight wobbles and unevenness should be expected although not enough to cause problems!

Some of the finished items feature extra markings found as a natural part of the branch's normal grain pattern, all of which have been brought out and highlighted by a healthy coat of Danish oil. In order to keep these coasters as natural as possible the oil is the only finish that has been applied so as not to distract from what Mother Nature has, quite literally, brought to the table (via Woodsmithery).

As these are handmade items sizes vary slightly but, roughly-speaking, the coasters are around 4" in diameter (100mm) by 0.75" (10mm) thick.
