A pair of small bowls or dishes of free-form shape, made from the root of a maple tree. These are about 1/2 inch (13mm) deep, so I'm not sure whether to call them shallow bowls or dishes. The larger of the two is about 6-1/2 inches long, and the smaller about 5-1/2 inches (17cm and 14cm). These are thinly-carved pieces, the two of them together weighing only about 2-1/2 ounces (72 grams). The shape is inspired by the flowing, organic shapes often found in mid-century modern coffee tables and the like.

These pieces exhibit the gorgeous, swirling grain and variations in color often found in root wood, and are much darker than maple taken from the trunk of the tree. (The wood is not stained; this is its natural color.) Parts of the surfaces feature the property known as chatoyancy, where the color changes depending on the angle you view it from. The two were cut from the same piece of wood, the smaller coming from below the larger. So the grain patterns in the two roughly echo one another, and this makes them even more striking and beautiful as a pair than they are singly. They're for sale only as a pair, and the price shown is for the two of them.

These would be a nice size for holding small candies, paper clips, jewelry, etc. Or just keep them on your desk, dresser or side table to enjoy the beautiful grain, organic shape and rich coloration.
