"But Edward supposed he was driving home. Seastars lying dormant near vermillion rockfish hiding amongst coral, strawberry anemone trod upon and over, dumb and dead-eyed giant sea bass pushing on through, bright orange garibaldi fish darting just out of reach over angel sharks laid out and hidden in the sand: these were just passing scenery on the road. There was no placement in his mind of what they were, no idea why it should seem odd that they moved without feet in all directions, no concern that the brisk morning air shouldn’t be thick and laborious. He moved with an insufferably slow, jerking palsy and it was another few months before he reached the base of Arch Rock on California’s Anacapa Island."
