Cherry Burl Wood Bowl, STEVIE, a Small Decorative Hand Turned Wooden Vessel

Cherry Burl Wood Bowl, STEVIE, a Small Decorative Hand Turned Wooden Vessel

Handmade

Materials

cherry wood, cherry, burl, wood, high friction polish

Description

Stevie is a small cherry burl wood bowl that was hand turned on my lathe from wood sustainably sourced here in Bourbon County, Kentucky. This particular piece of cherry was from the burl of the tree. Burls are knotty growths on trees where the wood has grown in a deformed manner. The deformation of the wood as the tree grew created a unique and visually striking grain when viewed from any vantage point. Within the burl were voids and sections of decay. Hence, there are large holes and dark decayed portions of the wood, and the thicknesses of the walls change in relation to the natural disfigurement of the wood. The holes and decayed portions were left intact and add to the uniqueness of the piece.

The bowl is approximately 4" wide, 2" tall, and 1-1/2" deep and was finished with high friction polish, which brought out the natural changes in coloring, tone, and grain in the wood.

Creekview Woodshop donates a portion of every sale to Green Forests Work, a nonprofit dedicated to re-establishing healthy and productive forests on formerly mined lands in Appalachia.

A little about me....
I’m a historical archaeologist and spend my days excavating sites, analyzing artifacts, and writing up my findings. When I’m not in the field, you’ll find me in my woodshop. I try to use mostly found and reclaimed wood from here in Central Kentucky, incorporating elements of the wood as I found it into each piece as a reminder that the object you see once was part of a beautiful, living tree.

My second purchase from Tanya and Creekview Woodshop for a gift to my wife is just as much a treasure to her as the first. To know that such a beautiful bowl is waiting to be patiently released from a rough chunk of wood astounds us both. Tanya is an artist in the truest sense of the word.

This bowl is stunning, exactly as pictured and described (not a given when shopping online these days). Actually, that is not entirely accurate because the patterns in the wood and the organic nature of this unique work of art can’t be fully replicated in a photo. It is even more beautiful than I had expected. Shipping was prompt, packaging excellent, and my communication with the shop entirely congenial and pleasurable. I highly recommend Creekview Woodshop!

“May” arrived, well packed, in less than 48 hours of placing the order! The spalted maple, live edge bowl is just as pictured and described. It is a wonderfully unique, perfectly executed piece. Could not be more pleased.

A beautifully made Blue Ash bowl! I've purchased other bowls from this seller and ALL have been of the highest quality. I LOVE the design of this bowl which really sets off the grain and wood colors. Lovely job well done on this bowl - thank you!
