Maple Burl Wood Plate, HANK, a Small Hand Turned Wooden Serving Dish

Maple Burl Wood Plate, HANK, a Small Hand Turned Wooden Serving Dish

  • Handmade
  • Materials: Wood

Hank is a maple burl wood plate that was hand turned on my lathe and made from responsibly sourced wood from Fayette County, Kentucky. This particular piece of maple was from the burl of the tree. Burls are knotty growths on trees where the wood has grown in a deformed manner. The deformation of the wood as the tree grew created a unique and visually striking grain when viewed from any vantage point. Several small worm holes also were present, and natural holes/voids in the burl can be seen along the plate's edge and in the foot of the vessel. They were left as-is and add to the uniqueness of the piece.

The plate is 5-3/8" wide and approximately 1" high and was finished with high friction polish, which brings out the natural changes in coloring, tone, and grain in the cedar wood. Be sure to note, though, that the finish is not technically food safe, thus it should not be immersed in or used to hold liquids. However, the plate may be used to serve cookies, crackers, and other dried goods.

A little about me....
I’m a historical archaeologist and spend my days excavating sites, analyzing artifacts, and writing up my findings. When I’m not in the field, you’ll find me in my woodshop. I try to use mostly found and reclaimed wood from here in Central Kentucky, incorporating elements of the wood as I found it into each piece as a reminder that the object you see once was part of a beautiful, living tree.

I purchased this as a gift for mothers day and it was perfect. The design, the wood itself and the craftsmanship are all superior. Thank you!

What a beautiful bowl! The care it took in chosing the wood and turning the bowl is very apparent. And the handwritten note was a great personal touch! I have this bowl in a special spot in my entryway so I see it every time I come home.

Arrived safely and quickly. The beautiful woodworking is so much more apparent in person. It's balanced and lightweight in profile and from the top. I bought it for myself when I finally get out of perpetual renting and into my first home as a future housewarming gift (couldn't resist). Thank you!
