SEWING PATTERN (a downloadable pdf file written in English)

Ginger

This fetching cocktail hat is now an exciting sewing project. I designed this hat in the style of the 1940's as a modified pillbox hat with a teardrop top and a slight peak at the front and at the back. The hat can be worn with the front or back peak facing forward, above the eyebrow. The pattern includes three trim options compatible with the 1940's or today.

This PDF file is instantly downloadable and can be printed on 8.5"x11" letter sized paper (USA) or A4 paper (European). It contains cut-out pattern shapes for a full range of sizes, detailed illustrations of each step of the project, sewing tips, notions required, fabric recommendations, size measurement instructions, links to a printable measuring tape as well as translations of hat sewing terminology in several other language and coupons for your next Elsewhen purchase. The sewing and millinery techniques in this pattern will be useful for future sewing projects and your overall understanding of hat construction.

SKILL LEVEL:
Intermediate - You must be familiar with your sewing machine and properties of different fabrics.

HAT SIZES:
20"-25" measuring around the head above the ear

FABRIC AND NOTIONS:
• ¼ yard of fabric
• Matching thread (hat and trim colors)
• Hand sewing needle
• 3’-5’ of plastic brim wire (1.25-1.5mm)
• Desired trim elements
• Desired attachment elements
• Sewing machine needle for thick fabrics (denim needle)
• ¼ yard of iron-on adhesive (optional)
• ¼ yard of cotton or canvas fabric (optional)

RECOMMENDED FABRICS:
I recommend medium or thick fabrics for this hat thickness like wool suiting, corduroy, faux fur, faux suede, light upholstery fabric or velvet. The key is achieving a rigid thickness so that the hat keeps its cylindrical pillbox shape. If you choose a light, pliable or stretchy fabric, it can be thickened or stabilized using the techniques on page 4. If you cannot find iron-on adhesive in stores or online, choose a fabric you can work with using the guidelines on page 4. Read and understand the thickening and cutting instructions on pages 4 and 5 before choosing your fabric. The cotton used for thickening fabric should be light in color for light outer fabric and dark for dark fabrics. Note that this cotton layer will also serve as a sort of lining for the teardrop shape. Choose an attractive print if it doesn’t show through the outer fabric.

My hat turned out great. The pattern had clear instructions and good diagrams. I have never made a hat before but I had no problem following the directions.

I've made this hat twice now. It takes a bit of practice, but once you have it down the results are stunning!
