The seventy-two different colors in this set are arrayed in twelve, six-step yarn gradations in the colors shown of two-ply jumper weight (fingering) Shetland yarn, which knits up at about 8 st/in on US 1-2 needles. Each ball of color is approximately 9-12 yards (8.22-10.97 meters). The total amount of yarn in this set is 380 grams (13.4 ounces), 1721 yards (1573 meters).

This is the last design set available. If I make these sets in the future, they will be priced at $114, which is the normal price of my sets at $0.30/gram.

The set comes in two layers of center pull balls tucked into a recloseable cardboard case with a carrying handle. Fair Isle design guidelines for color work are included. The colors span both high and low chroma, warm and cool.

The first photo shows the top layer. These colors form a color bridge from red to blue, with the addition of a high-chroma aqua and a neutral cool grayscale. The second photo shows the bottom layer. These are warm pale to mid-range colors with the addiiton of a high-chroma cerise. If you thread the working end of the bottom colors to the top layer, you can pull off what you need as you design from both layers.

This collection offers a great way to explore color design with yarn. Treat yourself to swatching and learning, or embark on projects. For large projects, you can easily add coordinating solid colors of another brand of yarn of the same size and use these colors for details.

Not interested in stranded knitting? This set includes the pattern for the felted hat shown, which uses only a couple of yards per color and requires no stranded knitting. Using black for full or dashed outlines of areas of color lets you mix nearly any colors without clashing. The striped example shown is a fun use of the yarn with gradations changed every row. These yarns would also suit entrelac, intarsia, crochet, and a wide variety of craft projects.

Please visit my “Profile” section to read the full story behind the yarn: how gradations are created, how they are used, and what physical properties the yarns and dyes have.
