Description

WWS 6mm Static Grass.

I have a general rule I apply when using static grass. I will use OO gauge as a standard gauge.

Static grass comes in multiple lengths, the reason for this is that you build the grass up to achieve a realistic looking grass. So we have broken down the process into explainable steps to help you. Plus, we have step by steps videos so you can see the results.

The grass
2mm Basing Grass
4mm Detailing Grass
6mm Detailing Grass
10mm Finishing Grass
12mm Finishing Grass
Glues
Static Grass Basing Glue
Static Grass Layering Spray
There are many glues on the market and static grass will stick to most. However, our Static Grass Basing Glue has been designed to work with our grass. It is fast drying and bonds to the baseboard, giving you a hard wearing coat that will stand up to the day to day wear and tear.

The next glue is the layering spray. This is an important spray, as you will need the spray so you can build the next stage of grass without flattening the grass you just laid. Again our Static Grass Layering Spray has been designed to be used with our range of grass.

Applicators
Pro Grass Applicator
Pro Grass Micro
Like the glues, there is a selection of applicators out there. Be careful which one you buy, some will only do 2mm grass, as the mesh is not big enough for the longer grass to go through. Do some research first. We have two applicators that we produce. The very successful Pro Grass Applicator that comes with the three heads that you need. Or our entry level Pro Grass Micro. It has the standard size head that will allow you to do up to 6mm. a great all-rounder and at a great cost. Most popular.

The process 2mm Basing
Starting from your base board, no need to paint it. Screw a small screw or knock a small nail into the baseboard so you can attach the crocodile clip of the applicator to the board. If you have track nearby, you can attach it to the track. Using a good strong glue, we recommend using our Static Grass Basing Glue. Cover the desired area with the glue. We suggest you work in small area. Pour the glue on to the board, use a brush to spread, covering the area you want to grass.

Fill your hopper half way with your chosen colour 2mm basing grass. Clip the crocodile clip to you nail, screw, or track. Switch on the applicator hold it above the glued area about 1 to 3 inches and shake and move around your glued area covering it all with your basing grass.

4mm Detailing
Take your layering spray and spray directly onto the grass you just laid. No need to wait until the basing glue is dry. You can leave excess grass there, I like to leave it as it adds texture and effect. Empty the 2mm grass out of the hopper back into your storage container. And put in your chosen colour 4mm Detailing Grass.

This is where you can get creative, selecting Colours that will build the look you want. I use Autumn 4mm on top of Spring 2mm a light base and then a darker colour on top. Apply the 4mm Detailing grass in patches, use different colour, like Dead, or Patchy to break up the solid colour. All our grasses blend together, so you will end up with a realistic look. Keep applying the layering spray before every layer you do.

6mm Detailing
Simply as above. Again select the colours you want, try to go for different to what you have already laid. Again lay in patches and keep adding until you think it looks like what you’re aiming for.

10mm & 12mm Finishing Grass
If you have our Pro Grass Applicator swop the head to the large one. Again spray the layering spray on top of your last layer. No need to worry about it drying, you can do the whole process without waiting for the glue to dry. Finishing grass is designed to give you the over grown look or a haze look over your wild meadow. It also applies to the 12mm. It looks great around industrial buildings, down sidings and on the top of an embankment.

So that’s it, the hardest part it the gluing. Remember your trying to represent nature. So if you do make a mistake, it turns out to be a good idea. Sometimes the best results come from the mistake.

I hope this helps you, please feel free to print this off and share it around. Also don’t forget to have a look around our site and watch the step by steps.
