The Inspiration:

Most things that we consider obvious today were once unheard of. The Hungarian physician Ignaz Semmelweis was influential in establishing sanitary conditions in surgery and the healthcare setting by demonstrating—using vigorous statistical methodologies—how the simple act of handwashing dramatically lowered death rates after childbirth. He became known as the "savior of mothers." When creating “The Apothecary” collection we couldn’t possibly ignore someone who made such an impact on the field of medical science.

Although Semmelweis's theory ultimately ushered in decent sanitary conditions in operating theaters and hospitals, he was ridiculed by the medical establishment of the time. This was the origin of the expression “The Semmelweis Reflex"—a tendency to reject new theories when they contradict established practice or understanding

The idea of connecting the name of a physician who conclusively proved the importance of sanitary conditions, with a used vintage medicine bottle might seem like a cruel irony; but the actual concept behind the creation of this item adds clarity. The bottle itself symbolizes all the imperfections of sanitary conditions which were highlighted by Ignaz Semmelweis in his groundbreaking theory which has saved millions of lives, in this case, highlighted by the LED’s In the base.

FAQs

Great spot! Yes, for this year, ALL our items come gift wrapped, for free. We have the option in checkout, which you may choose if you wish, however we would refund you the money automatically. Gift wrapping is free. When we send you your item, we want you to be as excited as we were making and sending it, and this helps. You're totally getting a present from us! :D
Thank you! :D In fact, George went into the local branch of the DIY superstore we buy our tools from, and the guard on the door on the way out wanted to see the receipt for the spice rack he was carrying (Having just bought new picture hooks for the backs). He was very excited. Truth is he is just really skilled at making things. We will upload some pics of our workspace and so on soon :) Check our website too for our photo galleries! :)
We often get asked about providing wholesale on our lamps. The answer is although we would love the opportunity, each lamp is unique. Once the bottles are used and designed into a lamp, it becomes one of a kind. Unfortunately, unless you have an idea for a collection or selection you'd like, we can't do this. Sorry!
Can you build me something? Answer: Yes! George loves a challenge and will be more than happy to work with you to design something that is perfect, either size or item-wise, for you and/or your home! We have built a few things, including lamps, home decor style pieces and various planters and so on. We can work with wood, electronics (LED or generic lamps) and a selection of metalwork is available. We will ask for a deposit on the item when work begins, with the remainder paid when we are ready to ship your item. Go nuts, let your imagination go and let's see what we can come up with for you :D
