This small doll is marked Germany 12/0 was probably made between 1900 and 1920. She is painted bisque, dressed in a nun's habit or for mourning, probably a French or German order. I am not accustomed to a nun's habit having lace and ribbon, but different orders wear different types of habit, especially European orders.

She is jointed at the head, arms, and legs. Her body is papier mache with painted low-heeled shoes. She has a red ribbon at one wrist which holds the corner of her veil. Her hair feels like unspun wool, not mohair or human hair. As a display doll, this does not really detract from her look.

There is no damage to her body or head, but her dress and veil are torn in several places-the result of fabric deterioration.

While her body is somewhat crude in the manufacture, she has pretty face with glass eyes which are set--not sleep eyes. These little costumed dolls have surprising detail in their dress.
