Full size Japanese Zen Rock Garden Large Rake [samon yo kumade].

For Karesansui dry garden.

This is an heirloom-quality tool meticulously designed and crafted for years of satisfying use.

The rake is constructed from white oak, a wood I chose not only for its sustainability and attractive suitable appearance, but also for its strength, durability, weight and weather resistance. [Tines are red oak]. It incorporates several attractive features for Zen gardeners:

The overall weight and satisfying heft of this tool (6 lbs.) guarantees that it will readily embed itself in the gravel rather than “float” on the top, thereby assuring sharp-edged patterns with a minimum of effort.

The seven 3-inch tines make furrows deep enough to ensure a well-defined edge.

The gentle taper of the 50 inch handle contributes to the excellent balance and feel of the rake, allowing for good support with the lower hand and and precise control with the top hand.

The handle attaches to the head with a simple no-glue wedged through-tenon joint. This is probably one of the strongest yet most elegant of all woodworking joints. Japanese carpenters use it in everything from wooden bucket handles to roof beams. Just press or gently tap the hardwood wedge with a hammer to snug the head to the handle for tight wriggle-free operation.

The head can be mounted to the handle either way so that you may easily remove it (via the simple wedge) and reverse it to even out any wear to the tines.

White oak is a very durable, relatively splinter-free and weather resistant wood. It can happily live outside for years. If left untreated it will turn a silvery-grey color. Alternatively, it can be oiled yearly to preserve its color.

Rake head measures 14” wide to facilitate navigation of tight rock formations and intricate patterns in even the smallest of gardens.

***** I can also adapt this same design to a 10 inches wide version with 5 tines for the smaller garden or tighter rock configurations. No additional charge. Contact me for a custom listing*****

Finish is a hand-rubbed, low-sheen, marine-grade teak oil.

Wood color, grain etc. will vary slightly from rake to rake. Each one is unique.

All rakes numbered & signed.
