Vintage St. Adrian of Nicomedia & the Scourged Christ Medal

I am delighted to offer this large medal with two rare Catholic devotional images. On the front is a full figure depiction of St. Adrian of Nicomedia, a pagan officer at the imperial court of Nicomedia. Impressed by the courage of a group of Christians who were being tortured, he declared himself a Christian and was imprisoned with them and suffered excruciating tortures before he was put to death. St. Adrian is the patron of soldiers

The verso features a rare full figure depiction of the Ecce Homo scene. Ecce Home ("behold the man"), are the Latin words used by Pontius Pilate when he presented a scourged Jesus Christ, bound and crowned with thorns, to a hostile crowd shortly before his Crucifixion. Our Lord is depicted wearing a loincloth and a cape, a crown of thorns on his head and torture wounds all over His body.

The medal is cast in aluminum, a metal that was once considered rare and more valuable than gold. Aluminum's cost exceeded that of gold because of the difficulty in extracting it. With the onset of industrial large-scale production in 1888 the price of aluminum dropped. It became widely used in jewelry, everyday items, eyeglass frames, optical instruments, tableware, and foil in the 1890s and early 20th century.

The medal is 1 1/2" across x 1 5/8" high not including the bail that slides into the chain. Both images are wonderfully cast with lovely fine details. Both sides of the medal bear the country of origin "Italy ". Large, well cast and finely finished, the medal is in Excellent vintage condition.
