"What can I do in such an hour, O my thousand-colored world, except gather this red beauty into the wind's purse and bring it home for supper?" --Abraham Sutzkever

The poem from which these lines come is titled "On my Wandering Flute," that is, a song/poem played on the flute that I play when I travel places. Abraham Sutzkever (1913-2010) was an acclaimed Yiddish poet, a member of the Yung Vilne Yiddish poetry movement of the 1930s, and a Holocaust survivor and founder of the Yiddish language poetry journal, Di Goldene Keyt (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abraham_Sutzkever). Sunset colors; the original was lettered, then screenprinted by hand, then reproduced.

Yes, Yiddish is written with Hebrew letters! Blank inside. English translation (by Ruth Whitman) on back. Shipping free.

You will receive 12 cards, 5"x5", printed professionally onto heavyweight cold press watercolor paper, with gold envelopes.

A listing with the original screenprint edition is also available in this shop:

Complete translation of poem:

A barefoot tramp on a stone
in evening-gold
brushes the dust of the world away.
A bird in flight
darts out of the wood
and grabs the last tatter of sun.

And there’s a willow near a pond.

A path.
A field.
A trembling meadow.
Hidden footprints
of hungry clouds.
Where are the hands that make miracles?

And there’s a fiddle that’s alive.

What can I do in such an hour,
O my thousand-colored world—
except
gather this red beauty
into the wind’s purse
and bring it home for supper.

And there’s desolation like a mountain.
