A short history of the garnet: Garnets are known as the birthstone of January and celebration of the 2nd year of marriage. The word Garnet comes from the Latin word 'Garanatus' meaning 'seed like' and referring to a pomegranate. The Egyptians are believed to have had a particular liking with this red stone, adorning their pharaohs with them as well as entombing them on their mummy's as prized possessions for the after life. In Roman times it was the most widely traded gem and in the middle ages, treasured by nobles and clergy. Thanks to the discovery of the famous Bohemian Garnet deposits in the 1500's, Garnets are now an abundant and widely spread gem stone.
