wood, natural wood

As with my other beaver tree stump bowls, the outside of this bowl has been beautifully carved and sculpted by my industrious coworkers, the beavers. The bowl is asymmetrical, its shape dictated by the cross section of the tree and by the beavers' choices as to where to gnaw into the wood to bring the tree down. This bowl is painted an indigo blue on the outside.

Normally, I prefer to leave all my woodcraft items in the natural colors of the wood. This particular beaver stump was fairly weathered when I collected it, and this gave the outside something of a dingy appearance. So I painted it, and this gives it quite an unusual look -- enhancing the already-unusual look of a bowl whose exterior is carved by beavers. In the interior of the bowl you'll see some filled-in cracks. Some of these are the result of the stresses on the wood fibers caused when the beavers felled the tree, and others are shrinkage cracks that occurred as the stump was drying. These cracks have been completely filled and stabilized with epoxy and sawdust.

Personally, I find endless delight and fascination in the grooved and facetted contours of these beaver-cut tree stumps. It's a wonderful example of how objects from nature can be not only beautiful, but imbued with artistry. The beavers certainly had no intention of making something creative and beautiful when they cut down this tree, but nonetheless they accomplished exactly that.

About 8 inches in its longest dimension, 7 inches wide and 3 inches high (20 x 17.5 x 7.5 cm). The bowl is finished with lacquer over the paint on the outside and a durable food-safe finish on the inside. It's suitable for hot or cold foods such as cereal, soups, fruit, etc. Strongly staining foods such as beets should be avoided, and the bowl should be hand washed without soaking. Care instructions will be included with the bowl. Of course, it can also be used purely as decoration.

If you're interested in this bowl (or even if you aren't), I highly recommend you check out the video of this bowl being displayed on a rotating turntable, which can be seen at: This video conveys the texture and luster of the bowl better than my still pictures can.
