This is a hand-made JolieFaire Medieval-inspired 'story tile.' During the Middle Ages, most people could not read, so stories, ideas, events and legends were conveyed in picture form. Here, I have carved a scribe, one of the most important members of any Medieval town or city community, for he was usually the only person in the community who could read and write. Lords, bureaucrats, wealthy merchants and others who had a need to communicate would hire the scribe to write their documents for them.

I have created this tile in white earthenware and finished it with a rich teddy bear brown glaze wash. It is kiln-fired and glazed, suitable for application indoors or out. Approx. 3.5" x 4.5." The back of the tile is notched for easy hanging on the wall.

Perhaps of interest to my fellow ceramicists, you can learn step by step how to create art tiles like mine in my new book "Creating Custom Art Tiles: The Moravian Method" now available at Amazon. (And here at Etsy, for a reduced price)
