I have just learned the art of lost wax casting, and have been enjoying getting back to my old passion of carving. In the lost wax casting process, one begins with basic shapes of wax. Then, the desired form is carved from the wax. A mold is made, into which molten metal is poured. After breaking the mold, the rough cast piece is worked until it is finished.

This is my very first lost wax piece. I have chosen to cast it in sterling silver, and have formed it around a unique moldavite. Moldavites are rare and unique tektites, or meteoric impact glass. They come from the Czech Republic, where there are only a few mines still mining this material. It is estimated that in ten years, moldavites will be mined out and thus, no more 'new' material will hit the market.

Moldavites are thought to have arrived when meteorites hit the earth 15 million years ago. Most authorities agree that this material is extraterrestrial in origin. It is a gorgeous, bottle green colour, and has the most amazing pitted and folded surface.

I have built a very organic pendant within which to showcase this piece of natural history. I tried to show the pitting and motion of the original impact in the form of the piece. This piece is cast in solid sterling silver, and is quite substantial.

The moldavite is held into place by prongs which I soldered into the pendant. The whole piece has been polished, and I used a touch of oxidization to lend contrast between the low and high areas. In order to allow the light to flow through the moldavite, this is an open-back pendant.

The chain is a long-link sterling silver piece, and closes with a hand-forged hook and eye. The pendant hangs from a tension-closed hand-forged jump ring. I have chosen a tension closed ring, as opposed to a soldered closed ring, in case one would like to change the chain. I do have a chunkier, more 'masculine' sterling silver chain in my studio which I can hang this from for an additional $25.

length of the necklace: approximately 20"
length of the chain links: 5/8"
length of the pendant, including the bail: 1 1/2"
length x width of moldavite: 15/16" x 7/16"
