Filigree Gallery. Luis Méndez Artesanos. Salamanca, Spain.
(Joyería filigrana. Luis Méndez Artesanos. Salamanca, España.)

Background:

The most representative piece of popular jewelry of Salamanca is the "charro"* button. Like all filigree jewelry, this button is made from a thread of silver or gold, which forms the flower-shaped frame of the piece. The interior spirals are made of finer twisted threads which fill the frame in order to create the surface, on which the adornments are applied.
*"Charro" is a colloquial term that refers to a person from Salamanca.

The button was used as an accessory on such garments as petticoats, doublets, drawers and waistcoats. Its use peaked in the 16th and 17th centuries. There is a whole range of different types, and although older buttons come in large sizes, today’s taste leans towards smaller models and different uses (cufflinks, rings, earrings, bracelets, etc.) designed as personal jewelry.
