Description

Highly unusual vintage Navajo / Native American ring is made from an oval turquoise cabochon set in sterling silver. The sawtooth bezel setting is surrounded by several layers of different motifs--twisted rope and balls, sawtooth-stamped scallops, and finally a ruffled outer edge that looks like flower petals. The whole thing reminds me of a flattened wedding cake. It's all completely handmade, and even the band is special, with the shank split three ways and additional stamping on the band.

It's a shame that such a beautiful piece of metalwork is unsigned. It's probably an older piece, as newer ones (post 1960s) are almost always signed or at least marked with a silver purity mark.

CONDITION NOTES: The stone has a hairline crack, but it's hard to see and the stone appears very stable. (See last photo). There is some tarnish. I give each piece a very light polish with a soft cloth, but I leave most of the polishing to the discretion of the buyer.

Size: Ring measures to a size 8-1/2 US. The top of the ring measures about 1-1/8 inches long x 1 inch wide. The stone measures about 13 mm x 9 mm. The ring weighs 9.7 grams.

Age: Unknown, but I think it's before the 1960s.

Materials: Sterling silver (tested), turquoise

Marks: Unmarked
