*Niobium is naturally as hypo-allergenic as pure gold so these earrings can be worn by anyone and everyone. It is about 20% lighter than sterling silver and less than half the weight of gold.

These earrings came about because a young lady who, at the age of 8, has developed a very easily set-off sensitivity to metals, but she really wants pierced ears. I had to come up with something that would suit her sense of style, but that would be age-appropriate. They had to be easy to put on and take off, but hard to lose. They had to be light so they didn't put a lot of weight on tender earlobes. And of course, they had to be a completely body friendly metal – not just 'hypo-allergenic'. I call them my Rose earrings because that's her middle name.

They are modified kidney wires that are particularly appropriate for pre-teens. Each is individually shaped by hand from 22 gauge niobium wire - smaller than my adult earwires, but about the same size as commercially available kidney wires – and carefully finished so there are no sharp edges to scratch little earlobes. They are 5/8 of an inch (16mm) high. Each matched pair has the closure hooks in opposite directions (unlike commercial kidney wires). Inserted one way, they are safer for sleeping because the wire can't poke into her neck. Inserted the other way, the hooks are less likely to snag on clothing or long hair.

For style, each earring has 3 small fluted rubber beads that fit the wire very snugly so they won't wiggle or rattle or slide off. Choose the colours that would suit your girl from the bead colour chart. The main photos are dark pink, light pink and white on natural coloured earwires, while the photo of Miss Rose herself (thanks to Miss Rose's Mom for the photo and permission to use it) shows them in white, dark pink and purple on pink coloured earwires. Please specify your colour choices (3 – starting from the bottom) in the message to seller area when you check out.

The niobium earwires can be coloured (at no extra charge) or left the natural platinum/silver colour. For the extremely sensitive wearer, it's safer to stay with the natural colour. I personally can't wear anything under 14 karat gold (nor surgical steel, silver of any kind, and certainly not those earrings marked simply hypo-allergenic) but I can wear coloured niobium. If you want the earwire coloured, just make your selection using the pull down menu. Niobium is notoriously difficult to photograph and your monitor's display may be very different from mine, so please, read the names of the colours in the colour chart. The anodized colours of niobium are rich, saturated and bright.
