Description

As we grow and evolve together as a species it always amazes me to think about how much we are entangled. In quantum entanglement experiments, the two particles still influence each other at great distances indicating their inseparability beyond the spatial dimension. This is mysterious. This quantum world is happening behind the scenes throughout our lives but it is not common knowledge as to the significance it has on our community involvement. I find this topic of great interest and now it is the title of this sculpture.

Carving this air-dried yellow cedar was absolutely marvelous - the knife would make cuts leaving the most impeccably smooth and shiny natural surface. Due to the particular form here, those cuts were rounded, smoothed over and finally sanded to a fine finish. The sculpture's surface is the natural wood - this preserves the material's tactility, aroma and appearance. The sculpture was carved from one block of wood. The inner areas were carved out with knives, gouges and chisels allowing a fine control of curve and contour.

This piece was an exploration of dynamic tension and resolution between parts. The two main parts can be seen as separate or not depending on how it is looked at. The two "attachment" points seem viscous and form a hole in between. The balance, diameters and positions are subtly placed providing a delicate overall harmony. The form has fluid connections and surfaces for a flowing feel. Despite the partial tensions there is an almost necessary and unavoidable dependence and support. As the inner dynamics flow from one part to the next the three ground contact points remain stable in their structural support.
