This is an original hand-pulled letterpress print by Chandler O'Leary, depicting the south face of Mount Rainier from the banks of the Nisqually RIver, inside Mount Rainier National Park. The Nisqually River begins as a mountain glacier above Paradise, the most frequently-visited part of the park. The meltwater from the glacier tumbles downhill and before long grows into a swift stream full of wild rapids. As it continues downhill, it widens, until it is the mighty river that empties into Puget Sound, feeding forests, prairies, wetlands and farm fields along the way.

This artwork was first hand-drawn from sketches, photos and data collected in-person, on-site. Then the illustration was converted by the artist into a photopolymer plate, and then letterpress printed by hand on an antique Vandercook No. 4 press, on soft white Rives Lightweight paper. It was then hand-painted with watercolor. Each print is numbered, signed and dated by the artist, and is "titled" with the latitude/longitude coordinates of the location the illustration was drawn from.

Edition of 49
Paper size: 6 x 7.5 inches
Image size: 3 x 5 inches

This print is part of a long-term project entitled "Local Conditions," which documents Mt. Rainier in all seasons, from every angle. The project began with a limited-edition artist book, and has expanded to include a series of individual letterpress prints excerpted from the book. There are 15 prints in the series—collect them all! You can view the others in the "Mt. Rainier prints" section of this shop:

Please note: because each print is individually hand-painted, no two are precisely alike. Please allow for slight differences and color variations from what is pictured here.
