Hybrid Lenten roses (Helleborus x hybridus), also known as hybrid hellebores or Orientalis Hybrids, are long-lived perennials that typically reach 12 to 18 inches tall and 1 to 2 feet wide. They flower in late winter to mid-spring, then send up rich green, palmate foliage that remains evergreen through winter in most areas. They tend to be deer-resistant but are not deer-proof. Lenten roses are commonly thought of as shade plants, but they can perform well with some sun too, particularly in Zone 7 and north, as long as the soil isn't too dry. USDA Hardiness Zone 5 (possibly 4) to 9.

I collected these seeds in early June 2020 from my collection of over 100 plants. The resulting seedlings will have a range of typical Lenten rose colors (primarily burgundy-reds, pinks, and white); may be spotted or solid-colored; and are most likely to be single-flowered. The photos above represent some flowers and plants in my collection but are shown here as representations only. I cannot guarantee any particular colors, shapes, or other flower features.

At least 20 seeds per packet.

Germination Information
I recommend these ONLY for gardeners who are experienced with handling seeds that have multi-cycle germination patterns (in this case, 70-40: 3 months of warmth and moisture followed by cool temperatures). The germination period takes anywhere from about 5 months to a year or more, and then it may take the plants another 3 or 4 years to reach flowering size. The entire process requires care and patience. If you are hoping to have flowers quickly, you are better off buying started plants.

For best results, purchase these seeds in June, July, or August. Sow them immediately upon receipt, about 1/3" deep, and leave outdoors so they experience a warm-moist period before the weather cools. In mild areas, the seeds may sprout in November or December; elsewhere, they should appear in spring.

If you sow after August, still sow immediately and leave outdoors; they may not sprout until fall of the following year, or the spring after. Or, consider providing an artificial (indoor) warm-cool treatment if you are sowing at a non-optimal time.

Whenever you sow, check regularly to make sure the soil does not dry out completely throughout the germination process. Also, protect from mice, which will happily feast on the seeds.

Shipping Information
Shipping for Hayefield seed orders is a flat fee of $3.75, or free if you spend $35 or more. That includes First-Class shipping with a tracking number and a padded 7" x 9" envelope to protect your seeds. Please don't blame me for the high shipping price. Etsy now charges sellers a significant fee on sales made through their off-site ads, even on shipping and sales tax, and it does not give me the option of withdrawing from that ad program, so I have had to raise my shipping charge significantly. If you wish to buy seeds from me at a lower shipping charge, please visit my site at https://hayefield.com/shop.

Additional Information
All seeds I sell are from open-pollinated plants grown in my Pennsylvania garden and meadow without chemical fertilizers or pesticides. I collect, clean, and pack them by hand into glassine envelopes. The hand-written label also includes my contact information, a minimum seed count, a "packed for" date, and a "sell-by" date, as required by my seed dealer's license from the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture. The packet does not include the germination information, so I suggest bookmarking this page or printing it for future reference.

As it is not possible for me to include everything there is to know about germinating and growing this plant in this space, it is up to you to do further research before ordering. Make sure that it is suited for your site and climate, that it is not considered invasive in your area, and that it is safe and appropriate for the use you intend to make of it (that it is not toxic to children or pets, for example, if they have unsupervised access to your garden). If in doubt, do not order.

If the seeds do not perform to your satisfaction, please contact me to discuss refund or replacement. My liability is limited to what you paid for the seeds.

Estimated delivery

The estimated delivery date is based on your purchase date, the recipient's location (actual or inferred), the seller's processing time and location, and the shipping carrier. Other factors—like placing an order on a weekend or a holiday—may end up pushing the arrival of your item beyond the estimated delivery date. It's our hope that your item gets where it's going as soon as possible, but given the factors involved, this is only an estimate.

These plants were in really good condition I planted most of them and then went away for 4 days and placed the rest in my refrigerator I was worried the entire time but when I came back the plants were happy still looking great. I hope I have luck watching them grow. And bloom. Thank you.

I received my hellebore seed promptly and greatly appreciate the detailed information on the sellers site for starting Helleborus seed. I planted the seeds promptly upon arrival as I’m aware that hellebores can be difficult and slow to start from seed, and should be sown as fresh as possible. The seller said minimum of 30 seeds and my seed packet had a lot more than 30 seeds. I didn’t count but guess it was closer to 60 or 100 seeds. I LOVE hellebores so I had no problem planting them all. I will try to remember to update this review next year to report on germination rates and growth of these plants.
