Item details

Vintage from the 1920s

Materials

steel, iron, rubber, chrome

This is a Remington Portable No. 1 antique working typewriter in very good condition. I've cleaned, polished, lubricated, and repaired this machine, and it is ready to use.

The Remington Portable No. 1 was one of the many Remington Portables the company introduced in the 1920s and 1930s. Some of the machines, such as this one, were painted in the bright, colorful hues provided by DuPont's DUCO line of automobile paints. This antique typewriter has a two-tone green paint scheme, and looks terrific.

**COSMETIC CONDITION**
Cosmetically, this Remington Portable No. 1 is beautiful, and in very good condition. The two-tone green color combination is uncommon, and, when paired with the bright nickel finish of the keys and control elements, makes for a striking machine. There are cosmetic imperfections, such as worn away or damaged paint, as well as some fading and other cosmetic imperfections. I find these wear and use marks to be a big part of the appeal of antique machines, as the history of each are unique, and the age-acquired condition gives each antique a unique, individual patina.

Overall, this Remington portable is a beautiful, colorful antique typewriter of distinction and character.

This Remington Monarch did have a carrying case, but it was not able to be recovered. The machine rests on the original base, but can be removed if desired.

**MECHANICAL CONDITION**
Mechanically, this Remington portable typewriter is in good condition. The machine works, but it does show its age. The platen has hardened significantly and will leave indents and cutouts as you type. (This effect can be limited by adding cushioning sheets of paper.) All the mechanical functions of the machine work properly, but not spectacularly, and the machine is not an easy one to use. As such, this machine is suitable for occasional use, such as poems, notes, or short letters, but I do not recommend it for lengthier or regular work.

**INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING**
I can ship internationally. If you're located outside the continental United States, contact me and I can provide a shipping quote.

**RECOMMENDED BUYER**
The Remington Portable No. 1 is a desirable, colorful antique typewriter. This kind of machine is ideal for decorators or collectors who want a beautiful antique typewriter that they can use for the occasional note or letter.

Brightly colored antique typewriters are some of the most sought after, both because of their striking hues and the appeal of having a solidly built, beautifully designed piece of mechanical art. This Remington is a tremendous typewriter, and will be a prized addition to any room or collection.

Thanks for looking, and feel free to ask me any questions.

Returns and exchange details

I sell vintage and antique typewriters that are no longer made, some of which are 100 years old or more. As much as I'd love to be able to tell you that they will always be problem-free and last forever, I can't, because they won't.

Older machines can develop problems without notice, even if they're properly maintained and loved. I promise to accurately describe, photograph, or video any typewriter I sell. If you want additional photos or have questions about anything, all you have to do is ask. You can also inspect the machines in person if you are in the Kansas City area.

So, to make a long story short, I will accept most returns, but I do ask that you pay for return shipping. If your typewriter does not work as it should upon arrival, I'll accept a return unless it was sold as a display model. Also, if you do experience a problem, many times there is a simple repair that will solve it. I can often walk you through the repair so you don't have to send the typewriter back.

Shipping policies

Unless otherwise agreed to or specified, I'll ship all typewriters via USPS, FedEx, or UPS at my discretion. I will use the method that is most economical for my buyers, and will ship to anywhere in the continental United States.

If you are located outside of the United States, please contact me before making a purchase. I can usually arrange shipping, but I don't want to make any promises I cannot keep.

As far as packaging goes, shipping typewriters is notoriously problematic for some people. Typewriters have heavy moving parts (the carriages) that can be easily damaged if not properly secured. I lock the carriages on all shipped typewriters if they have that feature, but I may also secure them with additional safety measures. I use a variety of techniques to make sure your machine gets to you in exactly the same condition it was in when I boxed it up.

Please be advised that some typewriters are very heavy, and can weigh 40 pounds or more. These heavier machines naturally have higher shipping costs associated with them.

Etsy keeps your payment information secure. Etsy shops never receive your credit card information.
I accept credit cards, PayPal, or Etsy gift cards. If you absolutely must have a machine and cannot pay me with either of these methods, please contact me so we can try to work out a solution. I know how strong the pull of a vintage manual typewriter can be, and I'll do my best to make sure I get your baby to you.

Additional policies

A lot of vintage stuff, especially typewriters, is beautiful and awesome. But I suppose you already knew that.
