FAQs

Every cabochon we sell is hand cut, shaped, and polished to the highest shine the stone will allow. Natural stones almost always contain surface features, textures, soft spots, vugs, healed fractures etc. We will never ship a stone showing poor craftsmanship with obvious scratches or blemishes. We try our best to note any excessive issues with the stone that you should be aware of. We never under any circumstances sell any stone known to have unstable fractures.
The finish on the backside of our cabochons will range from highly polished with no blemishes to lightly polished showing some minor blemishes. We do our best to eliminate all obvious saw marks and scratches but backsides might contain some flaws not visible from the front of the stone. Every backside is flat with no noticeable wobble unless noted in the description.

If your jewelry design requires a cosmetic view of the backside of the stone please contact us before purchasing and we will let you know if we feel the piece is suitable for such an application.
Our cabochons typically contain a girdle - a flat and polished edge around the outside perimeter of the stone. Girdle height will vary from stone to stone and we always try to show a laying flat view of the girdle in the photos. We do our best to provide a girdle of uniform height and smoothness around each stone, suitable for various methods of setting, but this can fluctuate on stones of greatly variable hardness. We grind a slight bevel around the bottom edge to reduce chipping. If your project requires a specific girdle height or angle please contact us before purchasing and we will be happy to take measurements and offer further advice. Girdle heights cannot be lowered because this would require a complete reshape of the dome.
All of our photos are taken with a digital (cell phone) camera and we never alter the colors in any of our photos. Digital cameras have a tendency to enhance some colors such as blue and purple. To help you understand what the cabochon will look like, we try to provide at least one photo in four different lighting conditions; direct LED (5400k), ambient fluorescent, direct sun, shaded daylight. Please view all photos carefully before purchasing. Additional photos and/or videos of the stone can be made available upon request.
No we do not. All of our stones are 100% natural unless otherwise specified. Occasionally we will sell materials that have been stabilized, fortified, or dyed, but we will always state this very clearly in the description.

Many stones contain natural fissures and pits that become exposed during the cab making process. It is common practice for cabochon makers to use clear epoxy to fill in these features to achieve a smooth surface. We avoid this because like all plastics, epoxy will turn yellow in a short amount of time. A filled cabochon might look great when you first receive it, but it will have dull yellow patches a year later.
Repeat customers are welcome to contact us and reserve an item as a verbal commitment to purchase the stone at the regular, non-sale price within an agreed upon time frame - typically two weeks.

We are sorry but we do not allow reservations for customers who have not purchased from us previously. This is due to repeated communication issues that have occurred (ie: it's not much fun trying to track people down weeks/months later to see if they still want the stone).
