These shoes are soft and sweet! They keep their shape very well. They are named for my mother, Doris Jane, because they are modeled from a pair of baby shoes that she wore 81 years ago. She gave me the shoes. The original shoes are made from leather and very worn but I was able to use them to figure out this unique pattern. The shoes have a high back with an ankle strap.

They are easy to make - even for beginners! The top of the shoe is one piece and that includes the straps that wrap around the ankle. The lining is fused to the outside material so you don’t have to make a separate lining that has to be attached. Fabric is fused to felt (wool or acrylic) and then the top and sole shapes are cut out and stitched. You can use either the fabric or felt side for the outside of the shoes. The top edges of the shoes and ankle straps are embroidered with the blanket stitch. The sample shoes have a button closure at the center of the ankle. Instructions are given to make a simple buttonhole embroidered with the blanket stitch. Another option would be to sew narrow strips of Velcro to the ends of the ankle straps.

This PDF e-pattern includes full size patterns, a materials list, instructions written in English, and step-by-step color photographs. The instructions include a diagram for the blanket stitch. Shoes will fit babies from newborn to approximately 16 months. Five sizes of shoes are included in pattern - lengths of finished soles are 4”, 4.25”, 4.5”, 4.75” and 5”. Optional instructions are given to put a non-skid sole on shoes for babies that are walking. Optional instructions are also given to add a piece of lace to the front of the shoes and crochet a simple edging around the top of the shoes and the ankle strap.
