Item details

Handmade

Material

maple root wood

A free-form shallow bowl (or deep dish) made from the root of a maple tree. Has the gorgeous, swirling grain and variations in color often found in root wood, and is much darker than maple taken from the trunk of the tree. (The wood is not stained; this is its natural color.) Finished with tung oil.

Free-form bowls like this require more time and labor to make than bowls turned on a lathe, but in return you get a lot of visual interest, and also the creative pleasure of coming up with an appealing shape. But while I'm delighted with the shape and craftsmanship of this piece, the real star of the show here is the incredible grain and coloration of the wood. Additionally, almost the entire inside surface of this bowl features a wonderful example of the property known as chatoyancy, where the color changes depending on the angle you view it from. Tip it forward and back in your hands, and the wood changes from a dark reddish brown to a silvery pale brown. All in all, this is honestly some of the most beautiful wood I've ever seen.

9.5 inches in its longest dimension, 8 inches wide and 1.25 inches high (24 x 20.5 x 3 cm). A nice size for holding chocolates, fruits such as cherries or strawberries, veggies and dip as shown in one of my photos, or perhaps a household's daily received mail. Or just keep it on your desk, dresser or side table to enjoy the beautiful grain, organic shape and rich coloration.
