Moths begin their lives as caterpillars, just like butterflies. They too must pupate and retreat within a cocoon to make their transformation from a vulnerable, worm-like larva to a colorful-winged, flying creature. It typically takes a luna moth two weeks to complete their metamorphosis. As adults, they emerge from their cocoons, always in the morning, with wet, soft wings. These brand-new moths must find somewhere safe to let them dry out and harden for about two hours before they can fly away.

This image is a print based on an original painting I did for a science-themed tarot deck, and represents the eight of cups. In traditional tarot, the eight of cups card can represent focusing on personal truths, looking inward, letting go, and moving on. At a certain time in its development, the luna moth caterpillar must let go of its familiar life of munching leaves with other caterpillars to cocoon itself, embarking on a solitary period of change and development.

This print was made using archival Epson Ultra Chrome pigment inks on Epson glossy photo paper. It arrives packaged in a protective cellophane sleeve.

This particular listing is for an 8.5"x11" sized print - you can also buy this print at 11"x17" in my store.
