Vintage 1940s Vera Maxwell Original Wool Tweed Coat, Orange Spice

This is a beautiful orange spice color wool tweed coat by Vera Maxwell that dates to the late 1940's. It has the classic 40's shape, slightly fitted and sleek with turned up cuffs at the wrists. The coat has princess pieced seaming at the back and an interesting bodice and sleeve treatment. There are three buttons that fasten at the bodice only and the lining is a beautiful two tone dark russet satin. There is a very old garment tag inside the sleeve under the arm that says: National Coat and Suit Board....Manufacture and Fair Labor Standards.

Excellent condition! I have steamed this to freshen but it has not been dry cleaned. I did have to add a missing button at the last hole, see the photo. It was the best match I had and believe me, I have thousands of buttons, heaven knows! It is a braided leather shank button and adds a bit of fun, don't you think?

*Vera Maxwell began her design career in the 1930's, forming Vera Maxwell Originals in 1947 which sold strong through the 1960's. She was famous for her suits and topcoats due to her wonderful fabrics, colors and tailoring. Vera is credited for the trend in Ultra Suede in the 1970's. Along with the designers Bonnie Cashin and Claire McCardell, Vera Maxwell was a pioneer of "ready to wear"sportswear in America.

Measurements; The measurements are of the garment and not the body that will go into it so please add inches for ease of wear and room for sweaters underneath. I estimate this should fit a modern size womens medium.
