Description

Master potter Bridget Hauser moved to Texas from the Midwest in 1981 and began working at Clarksville Pottery in Austin, later owning part of the business. It was during these years that she made this beautiful pitcher. In 1996 she moved to Dripping Springs, Texas and reopened the pottery as Sunset Canyon Pottery, where she spent 20 years creating her art. In 2016 she moved on to her present studio in San Marcos, Texas, which she named Tree House Studios.

This pitcher has her complex glazes in the brown, green and amber autumnal colors which adorn many of her works, making them so distinctive and recognizable. However, we did correspond with Mrs. Hauser and she confirmed she made this pitcher "in the late 80's." The glazes swoop and swirl and speckle and drip, with only a 1/4 inch band at the base and the 3 1/2 inch diameter bottom left unglazed, revealing the creamy white stoneware clay. Mrs. Hauser marked this piece on the bottom with her handpainted "Bridget." The pitcher is expertly formed, with a wide, pulled spout, a broad, grooved strap handle and a bulbous belly about 7 inches across and 21 inches in circumference. The potter's finger grooves are evident on the interior.

This piece is quite heavy, weighing 3 1/2 pounds and measuring about 10 inches in height. It's in superb condition, appearing to have never been used, just displayed. Other than a bit of shelf abrasion on the bottom, there is no evident wear. This pitcher's a work of art that melds flawlessly with both rustic and modern interiors.

Note: Bridget Hauser's pottery will be featured at the 26th annual Texas Clay Festival in New Braunfels on October 27th and 28th, 2018. Here's the link:
