****Explanation of how a Martingale works:
This style collar is used for training, more control of dog and also for dogs who have smaller heads than necks and can slip standard side release collars.
Martingale collars have a "control loop" that the leash ( or when held) attaches to and when loop is pulled, the main collar body tightens so than the collar becomes tighter on the dog.

* Martingale collars are limited slip collars that when adjusted correctly on each dog, the collar does not continue to tighten thus choking the dog.

*** WARNING: ATTENTION: NEVER leave a dog unattended while wearing OR tie your dog outside while wearing a Martingale collar without direct supervision. This may cause CHOKING. This misuse may result in your dog being injured. Collars are NOT guaranteed by this misuse and we are NOT held liable if your dog is injured!

Directions measuring for a Martingale collar so that I know the correct length/size to make the dog.

** We MUST have BREED or type of dog & all HEAD and NECK measurements of your dog. Please refer to diagram in picture for instructions.

Sizing - For ALL dogs measure circumference in THREE places. See pictured diagram in this listing or in martingale upgrade listing.

A) HEAD over "biggest" part of ears (over ears) circumference including ears in measurement. We must know the "biggest" part of dogs head so I can make the collar long enough to comfortably slip over your dogs head. Martingales do NOT open like a side release collar so the collar needs to be long enough to easily slip over dogs head.
B) MID neck (where collar sits).
C) Base of neck (lowest part of neck).
D) Breed or body type of dog.

** A Martingale should never be left on any dog without direct supervision. We do not recommend using a Martingale collar on any dog younger than Nine months of age.

Wikipedia - A martingale is a type of dog collar that provides more control over the animal without the choking effect of a slip collar. It is similar in concept to a horse's martingale. Martingales are gaining in popularity since they are so useful without choking (if adjusted & used properly). They are perfect for most dogs over approx. Six months for training, for dogs whose heads are smaller than their necks and slips the standard side release collars. Martingales were originally used on Sight hounds but since they are so useful on other breeds of dogs they are rapidly gaining in popularity.

Martingale Dog collars are also known as Greyhound, Whippet or humane choke collars. The Martingale dog collar was designed for Sight hounds because their necks are larger than their heads and they can often slip out of buckle collars. These collars have gained popularity among other breed owners in the recent past with many trainers now recommending them instead of choke chains or buckle collars. If adjusted properly they do not choke.

Martingale Dog Collars are fitted to the exact size of the dog's neck when the collar is pulled closed. Properly fitted, the collar will be comfortably loose when not in use. When the Martingale control loop is pulled, the two slides (hardware on the small control loop of the Martingale Collar) should pull close together, the two slides should almost touch. A martingale should stop and not choke unlike choke collars. Martingales are worn differently than standard side release collars.
