Description

This ceramic weathered looking birdhouse is made of white clay. First I formed slabs and with the help of my self-designed mold, I handbuild the pieces together. After the construction, I used a needle tool to create marks. The color comes from terra sigillata and ceramic stains. After firing to cone 06, I used underglaze tho wash in black color into the needle marks and to create a weathered look. Then I had to fire the birdhouse again. Finally, I sealed it to prevent the ceramic birdhouse from soaking in water during rain. I am using an outdoor ceramic sealer similar to the concrete sealer. It is a functional birdhouse, but most of my clients display them indoors. I keep my birdhouses under the roof outdoors, hanging from the wall of my house.
My birdhouse has four holes: one for birds to enter, two in the back, one small for hanging the birdhouse securely and one bigger to clean out old nests. The 4th tiny hole is in the bottom of the ceramic birdhouse to accommodate drainage during a thunderstorm if the wind blows rain through the front hole.
I would recommend displaying the functional ceramic birdhouse indoors or under a roof outdoors.
