This is a reproduction artifact based on the mortar and pestles and the matate and mano used by prehistoric people. The bowl part is carved from native Montana volcanic tuff (basically volcanic ash that has turned to stone over time). The grinder part is a real stone gathered from a nearby riverbed. The bowl measures about 10-1/4" X 8 X 3”; the grinder measures about 6-1/4” X 2-1/4”. I do not recommend this for normal use. It was created for decorative purposes only.

The volcanic tuff is a bit fragile. I do not recommend displaying this piece out in the weather.

The carving has gone through a special finishing process I developed using a beeswax and soot mixture based on the wax tablets used by the ancient Romans and monks.
