"Purple. Praying for Mother" may seem like an odd title, but when this story formed in my mind, that was the exact title that came with it! Based on an actual place in my city, a cloistered convent called the Blue Chapel, this is a story of a 19th century little girl's faith, of a beautiful eggplant plant--a thing she had never seen before, and of an old prayer book that comforts her as she prays and strives to believe that her ill mother will get well. How do all of these things come to play in this story? You will just have to read it to find out! Here is an excerpt:

"Have you ever felt like that--have you ever wanted something so very much that it becomes a magical thing to you--that you think that it could solve your worst problem, that it could bring perfect peace from worries, if you could have it, if even for a little while? Well, if you've felt like that, then you know how it was with the purple prayer book, how it was with the purple plants in the Blue Chapel Garden."

"Purple. Praying for Mother" is eight and a half by eleven inches in size, nine pages in length, and illustrated by several pictures, including a copy of a 19th century tintype. The face of that now-unknown girl has become the face of the child in my story. The booklet is nine pages in length, its pages enclosed in plastic protectors, held together by vintage purple ribbons.
