Item details

Vintage from the 1960s

Materials

metal, plastic, chrome, rubber

This is an Underwood 21 vintage manual typewriter. This machine has been reconditioned and is in excellent working and cosmetic condition.

The Underwood 21 is an Olivetti typewriter in all but name. Olivetti purchased Underwood in 1959 and soon thereafter began making Olivetti machines with the Underwood name. The Underwood 21 was only made for a few years in the early 60s, but have proven to be solid and reliable typers. These are Olivetti machines in every aspect the name badge. As such, they are well made, reliable machines that are a joy to type on.

As with all my typewriters, I have cleaned, lubricated, adjusted, and polished this vintage typewriter. I have also installed a new ribbon, so this machine is ready-to-use as soon as you get it home.

**COSMETIC CONDITION**
Cosmetically, this Olivetti typewriter is in excellent (9 out of 10) condition. The blue and gray color scheme is decidedly Olivetti, and looks great against the squared black plastic keys. The metal accents and control elements are clean and bright, and the machine presents an overall look of a well-made mid-century typewriter.

This Olivetti typewriter also comes with a carrying case that is in good or better (7+ out of 10) condition. However, the case retains an odor to it that I've not been able to get out with either de-odorizing or masking agents. I will ship the machine in the case as it adds essential shipping safety, but I do not recommend keeping the machine stored in it.

**MECHANICAL CONDITION**
Mechanically, this vintage typewriter is in excellent flawless (9 out of 10) condition. Everything on this machine works easily, and it types like a dream. While the platen has hardened some and will leave occasional indents in the page, this is expected and not a significant problem for a machine of this age. Also, the cursive/script typeface is somewhat rare for an Olivetti, and is highly desirable.

**INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING**
I do ship internationally, so please contact me for a quote if you are interested in any of my typewriters but are located outside of the United States.

**RECOMMENDED BUYER**
I believe this Underwood 21 would be best suited for a designer who needs a classic mid-century typewriter for occasional writing, or for a serious writer who wants a larger, more-stable machine for heavy writing duties. Olivettis can be hit or miss when it comes to reliability, but this machine is in superior mechanical condition and is ready to write for a long time if called upon. That it also has a script typeface makes it that much more attractive. This is a quality machine and one that anyone would be pleased having.

Thank you for looking, and feel free to contact me with any questions you might have.

Returns and exchange details

I sell vintage and antique typewriters that are no longer made, some of which are 100 years old or more. As much as I'd love to be able to tell you that they will always be problem-free and last forever, I can't, because they won't.

Older machines can develop problems without notice, even if they're properly maintained and loved. I promise to accurately describe, photograph, or video any typewriter I sell. If you want additional photos or have questions about anything, all you have to do is ask. You can also inspect the machines in person if you are in the Kansas City area.

So, to make a long story short, I will accept most returns, but I do ask that you pay for return shipping. If your typewriter does not work as it should upon arrival, I'll accept a return unless it was sold as a display model. Also, if you do experience a problem, many times there is a simple repair that will solve it. I can often walk you through the repair so you don't have to send the typewriter back.

Shipping policies

Unless otherwise agreed to or specified, I'll ship all typewriters via USPS, FedEx, or UPS at my discretion. I will use the method that is most economical for my buyers, and will ship to anywhere in the continental United States.

If you are located outside of the United States, please contact me before making a purchase. I can usually arrange shipping, but I don't want to make any promises I cannot keep.

As far as packaging goes, shipping typewriters is notoriously problematic for some people. Typewriters have heavy moving parts (the carriages) that can be easily damaged if not properly secured. I lock the carriages on all shipped typewriters if they have that feature, but I may also secure them with additional safety measures. I use a variety of techniques to make sure your machine gets to you in exactly the same condition it was in when I boxed it up.

Please be advised that some typewriters are very heavy, and can weigh 40 pounds or more. These heavier machines naturally have higher shipping costs associated with them.

Additional policies

A lot of vintage stuff, especially typewriters, is beautiful and awesome. But I suppose you already knew that.
