Vintage from the 1920s

Materials

chrome, rubber, nickel, iron

This is a Royal P manual typewriter in maroon "Alligator skin" paint. This working antique typewriter is in very good condition.

Introduced in 1926, the Model P was Royal's first portable manual typewriter. It was designed at the height of the roaring 20s, and has a color scheme that is, perhaps, a physical embodiment of the exuberance of its time. The Royal Model P machines were renowned for the bright, vivid, and unique colors achieved through DuPont's then new line of Duco automotive lacquers. This particular P has a rare faux-Alligator skin maroon color.

As with all my machines, I've repaired, cleaned, lubricated, and polished this Royal P. It comes installed with a new ribbon and is ready-to-use as soon as you get it home.

**COSMETIC CONDITION**
This Royal portable typewriter is in very good cosmetic condition. The maroon alligator skin paint is a stunning, and a rare find. The faux-alligator skin look was achieved by a first application of the base maroon color, waiting for it to dry, and then later adding a thinner black layer which was rapidly heated halfway through the drying process so the paint would shrink and form individual spots. This was a time-intensive process, making the alligator-skin versions significantly less common.

There are some cosmetic flaws here and there, such as a failed re-touch attempt in a few places, some chips, and some wear and use marks. These issues do little to dull the overall beauty of this machine, and this P is a stunning find.

The nickel-rimmed, glass-topped keys are in good shape, as are the chrome and bright metal accent pieces and name decals.

This Royal P also comes with a matching burgundy carrying case that is in good function condition, but which is missing its leather handle. Also, the base is attached to the machine with four screws/rubber feet. You can remove the typewriter from the base by removing these.

**MECHANICAL CONDITION**
This Royal P manual typewriter is in good mechanical condition. The rubber on this Royal P has hardened some with age, as is common with machines of this age, so the type slugs will leave indentations in the page, though this effect can be lessened with cushioning paper.

The only mechanical issue with this machine is that it's ribbon color selector is not functioning. Theres a part that needs to be replaced for the selector to perform as it should without interfering with other parts of the machine, but as I don't have a donor machine and cannot fabricate a new part, I've disabled the selector and installed a black ribbon. So, the machine types as it should, but you will not be able to use a bi-color ribbon with it, or adjust the ribbon color selector.

**RECOMMENDED BUYER**
I'd recommend this Royal typewriter for a collector or designers who wants a beautiful machine as an accent or focal piece, or for a writer who wants a machine of character and style to us for display and occasional use. I do not recommend this machine for someone who wants to use it for heavy writing purposes, as these antique machines tend to be a lot harder on a typist's hands, and a more modern machine is much better suited to heavy writing task. Collectors who want a beautiful, rare, an d unusual color-combination Royal P will also be interested in this machine.

If you are looking for a unique, beautiful, standout typewriter to display in you home, and one that will draw the admiration of anyone who sees it, this Royal P is the machine you're lookin for.

**INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING**
I will ship internationally, so please contact me for a quote if you are interested in delivery outside of the continental United States.

Returns and exchange details

I sell vintage and antique typewriters that are no longer made, some of which are 100 years old or more. As much as I'd love to be able to tell you that they will always be problem-free and last forever, I can't, because they won't.

Older machines can develop problems without notice, even if they're properly maintained and loved. I promise to accurately describe, photograph, or video any typewriter I sell. If you want additional photos or have questions about anything, all you have to do is ask. You can also inspect the machines in person if you are in the Kansas City area.

So, to make a long story short, I will accept most returns, but I do ask that you pay for return shipping. If your typewriter does not work as it should upon arrival, I'll accept a return unless it was sold as a display model. Also, if you do experience a problem, many times there is a simple repair that will solve it. I can often walk you through the repair so you don't have to send the typewriter back.

Shipping policies

Unless otherwise agreed to or specified, I'll ship all typewriters via USPS, FedEx, or UPS at my discretion. I will use the method that is most economical for my buyers, and will ship to anywhere in the continental United States.

If you are located outside of the United States, please contact me before making a purchase. I can usually arrange shipping, but I don't want to make any promises I cannot keep.

As far as packaging goes, shipping typewriters is notoriously problematic for some people. Typewriters have heavy moving parts (the carriages) that can be easily damaged if not properly secured. I lock the carriages on all shipped typewriters if they have that feature, but I may also secure them with additional safety measures. I use a variety of techniques to make sure your machine gets to you in exactly the same condition it was in when I boxed it up.

Please be advised that some typewriters are very heavy, and can weigh 40 pounds or more. These heavier machines naturally have higher shipping costs associated with them.

Etsy keeps your payment information secure. Etsy shops never receive your credit card information.
I accept credit cards, PayPal, or Etsy gift cards. If you absolutely must have a machine and cannot pay me with either of these methods, please contact me so we can try to work out a solution. I know how strong the pull of a vintage manual typewriter can be, and I'll do my best to make sure I get your baby to you.
