Description

An English Victorian antique sewing or work box. Listing is for the box only, not the sewing items shown.

Small wooden box with a dark stain and varnished finish and an ornate, Renaissance style transfer print applied to the lid.

There is a brass escutcheon and lock to the front panel, but no key.

The interior is fully lined with the original metallic gold and pale yellow patterned paper.

It features a small mirror to the inner lid, framed by metallic gold foil and red paper border, and an eight sectioned lift out tray with a deep violet velvet lid, topped with a machine turned wood finial over the center section.

Nice example of a late 19th century ladies storage box for sewing items.

It measures 21.5 cm / 8.5" wide by 14.5 cm / 5.75" deep by 7.5 cm / 3" high.

Condition is generally good for it's age, but there are a few issues:

• There is some loss to the transfer print on the lid.

• The lid is slightly out of alignment because there has been a "make do" repair with a small nail to one of the hinges.

• The paper lining to the underside of the box is creased, marked with some loss at the corners.

• The mirror has some marking and loss to the silvering.

• There are a few areas of small tears and loss to the paper lining to the interior.

Please see all the detail photos and convo me with any questions.
