Recognizable as the September birthstone, Sapphire is also very commonly purchased as engagement and promise rings.

A corundum mineral, it is most popular in its deep blue form and its rich pink form. Sapphire is rumored to have fallen from the night sky down to Earth where it is appreciated by many jewelry lovers today. Sapphires have also been said to represent fidelity, truth, purity and chastity. The region where a Sapphire is found often determines the appearance and color of the stone. Kashmir Sapphires have a velvety shine on top of blue and violet undertones and are regarded as the most beautiful and most valuable types. Second to Kashmir Sapphires are Burmese Sapphires which are royal to cornflower blue in color. Still some of the oldest and most appreciated specialties are Ceylon Sapphires. Ceylon is known as Sri Lanka today, and these ancient Sapphires' signatures are their light to medium blue pigments. To achieve its brilliant colors, Sapphires are often treated by diffusion and heat. These permanent treatments help the true beauty of each stone shine through. Sapphires are considered one of the four precious gemstones along with Emeralds, Rubies, and Diamonds. Ranking 9 out of 10 on the Mohs scale (used to determine gem hardness), a Sapphire is extremely hard and durable enough to be worn as often as one chooses. Sapphires are found in a rainbow of colors from the famous Kashmir blue to the exotic Padparadscha of sunset color, with pinks, lavenders and greens of brilliant depth and color!
