Description

Arachnid Constellation, a hand embossed repoussé metal framed artwork, created from sheet pewter.

Another in my ongoing series of imaginary constellations. I have been inspired lately by vintage engravings of star charts, though a few of my favourite animals seemed to be missing. Here's a spider with his latin name, with his legs, body and surroundings set with clear gems. Set under a black mat in a simple resin frame. This frame can be hung on a wall and also has a fold out stand so it can be placed on a flat surface.

Approximate sizes:
Frame: 17.5cm x 17.5cm x 2cm / 7" x 7" x .8"
Embossed panel: 11.5cm x 11.5cm / 4.5" x 4.5"

All pieces ship ready to hang with a D-Ring screwed into the backing, or in some cases where noted, a fold out stand. I try to take photos of my pieces from several different angles to show the way the light interacts with the metal surface and paint, and the three-dimensional embossed shapes and textures (any props/easels in the photographs are for display only and are not included in the listing).

This item will be shipped to you regular airmail, which takes approx 3-4 working days to Australian locations and 7-10 working days to International locations. Please let me know if you would like the item shipped express, with tracking or with insurance.

I do ship worldwide wherever possible though I have not included shipping costs for all countries – if a shipping cost for your country is not listed, please contact me and I will give you a quote.

A CURIOUS ELIXIR : AN ALCHEMICAL TRANSFORMATION OF PEWTER INTO UNIQUE ARTWORKS

Using a metal tooling technique known as repoussé, I emboss each piece by hand in my Melbourne studio. After pressing the design into the pewter sheet, the surface is etched, bumped, scratched, marked, doused with a dark patinating solution and then polished back to give it a tarnished, aged look, leaving the metal surface stained with tones of blacks, browns, blues, golds and silvers - this process is wonderfully unpredictable, so every piece is completely unique. The piece is then finished with gems, glass paint, enamels, iridescent pigments and sometimes patterned origami papers or vintage engraving imagery. Each wall piece is sealed with several layers of crystalline wax to protect the surface, mounted on mdf panel and framed up ready to hang.

I may sometimes reuse patterns though I never use a stamp or machine embosser to create my artworks – every piece of metal art in this shop is handmade and one of a kind.

I've been selling artworks for many years now through my other online stores and I've never had an item go missing or arrive damaged so it's very unlikely!

Additional policies

Custom orders: I am happy to create a custom order by adapting an existing design or creating something new for you. Please note that custom orders can take 2-4 weeks to complete (not including shipping times), depending on the complexity of the design and availability of materials.

Wall art aftercare: My pieces have been sealed to protect the surface, though as with all artworks, they should be handled with care. The surface may become scratched or otherwise damaged should the work be roughly handled or dropped, therefore they are not meant as children's toys, and should not be placed outdoors. Over time, dust may settle on the surface, so to clean the piece you can wipe over it gently with a soft cloth, ideally a metal or camera lens polishing cloth or even a soft old t-shirt (nothing scratchy). Please do not use any cleaning or metal polishing solutions on the surface as you may damage the finish.
