Item details

Vintage from the 19th century

wood, glass, paper

This is mid 19th century pocket compass in a wood housing with an applied paper tartanware finish in what appears to be the Albert pattern. The tartan is in poor condition with dark varnish obscuring most of the pattern. The glass is rim chipped and there is dust and debris clouding the dial which appears to be hand delineated. Scale marked on chapter ring (dial is graduated in quadrants every 5º, numbered every 10º;) please view all pics for size and detail. The lid fits very tightly to the box, so this will be shipped with the lid loosely fitted for ease of removal. Traces of a paper sticker remain adhered to the inner lid.

* All of our compasses are sold as relics; some of them do point north more strongly than others but none should be considered an accurate scientific instrument.
